Celebrating Burn’s Night

Burn’s Night has become one of my favourite moments in the year. I’ve been living in Scotland for 12 years now and my children attend Scottish schools, so every January I get to see first-hand how proudly Scotland’s traditions are celebrated and passed on. The poetry, dancing and music are woven into school life, and it’s lovely to see how everyone gets involved.

At one of the darkest points of the year, it's the perfect time to come together with family and friends, light some candles and enjoy a proper Burn’s Night Supper.

One of the best things about Burn’s Night is its wonderfully playful traditions. The food alone is part of the fun, with haggis, neeps and tatties taking centre stage, alongside poetry, song and plenty of toasts. It’s common for everyone to share something, whether that’s reading a poem, singing a song or raising a glass.

Of course lots of folk recite the poetry of Rabbie Burns, the Bard himself. His poetry dates back to the 1700s and is written in Scots. A great moment in the night is the Address to a Haggis, recited as the haggis is carried in and ceremonially stabbed (!) with a blade, while the words “O what a glorious sight, warm-reekin, rich!” make my children giggle.

My own favourite Burns poems Up in the Morning (is no for me) and Ca’ the Yowes, especially the version sung by Joanna Newsom.

Wherever you are in the world, I’d really recommend marking Burn’s Night in some way. Get together with folk, share a poem or a song and enjoy a moment of connection. It’s a wonderful way to bring a little light to these dark, dreich days.

To mark the occasion, we’re offering 15% off site-wide, including sale items, from now until 31st January.
