FAQ - Soaps
What is a Salt Soap?
Salt soaps are cold-processed handmade soaps made with coconut oil, shea butter and salt. We use both Himalayan salt and Sicilian sea salt.
There are many incredible benefits of adding salt:
- salt soap bars are harder - so they last longer
- the essential oils smell stronger and clearer
- the lather is thicker and more luxurious
- salt also softens the water - so you need less soap to clean yourself
Put simply: adding salt improves scent, lather and longevity.
Do you really make it yourself?
Yes, all of our products are handmade in our small workshop in Portobello, Edinburgh.
We are a small team and make each and every soap by pouring them into moulds. The soaps are left to set overnight, they are then demoulded, then wrapped with care in plastic-free packaging.
You can come to visit our workshop, we're based at 22 Joppa Rd, Edinburgh EH15 2EU
Why do they cost more than supermarket soaps?
We take pride in small-batch production which uses premium, natural ingredients. Our packaging is made using recycled coffee cups and printed in a family-run Scottish print-works in Aberdeen.
Dook soaps are worth it because they:
- last longer than an average soap bar
- work brilliantly
- never dry your skin out
- are scented with natural essential oils
- have been made using premium sustainably sourced ingredients
- have been made by people who are being paid properly (All staff at Dook are paid at least the Real Living Wage.)
When you buy a Dook soap you are supporting a small Scottish, woman owned business that pays tax and gives back in to the local economy.
Don't soap bars dry your skin?
Dook soaps will not dry your skin.
Our soaps are enriched with raw, organic shea butter which we source from a women's co-operative in Ghana. Shea butter is a skin loving ingredient packed full of nourishing fatty acids and vitamins.
Handmade soap also contains naturally occurring glycerin. Glycerin is a humectant which helps your skin to attract and retain moisture.
How can I use something so pretty?
Lots of folks buy our salt soaps to scent their knicker-drawers (!) but we really encourage you to use your bar when bathing.
The colours go all the way through the soaps, so as you use it you wear away the top layer to reveal the pattern. We like to think it's just like how the sea erodes a pebble on the beach.
